Suicides Outnumber Battle Deaths in the Armed Services |

Approximately every 80 minutes, a US military veteran commits suicide in the United States; for Iraq and Afghanistan, the numbers of veterans lost to suicide now outstrips casualty lists of those killed in action. The suicide rate for active duty personnel isn’t so shockingly high, but it’s still significant; in the first half of 2012, almost one soldier a day took his or her own life. Both veterans and combat personnel have experienced a steep rise in suicide rates since 2005, which notably marked a sharp increase in the intensity of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Can Oregano Replace Antibiotics for Chickens? |

A chicken cooked with a sprig of oregano may have good reason to enjoy that herb in its lifetime too.
In a New York Times story published on Dec. 25, Scott Sechler of the Pennsylvania chicken producer Bell & Evans says that his antibiotic-free birds peck at feed mixed with oregano oil and a touch of cinnamon.

Strengthening the rule of law, justice and security will be critical for the stability and inclusive growth of Arab states, especially those now facing the transition to democracy, said the head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
“Where societies are emerging from conflict, social and political upheaval, strengthening the rule of law is particularly important for making a transition to a more peaceful and cohesive future,” said UNDP Administrator Helen Clark yesterday at an event hosted by Qatar University’s new Distinguished Speaker Programme.

World Travel Awards winners for 2012 include Finch Bay Eco Hotel in the Galapagos Islands as “South America’s leading green hotel.” The hotel’s commitment to the environment of the isolated Ecuadorian archipelago won out over nine other nominees in four other nations.
The WTA awards program, known as the “Oscars of the travel industry,” highlights and rewards travel brands that have made the greatest contribution to the industry over the past year.
