New Momentum For Shark Conservation Balances out Established Commercial Interests PDF  | Print |  E-mail

This special  Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)  update is brought to you by the newly launched  Tunisian Environment Reporting Network, who are currently attending  the 40th meeting  of the Parties as part of the Internews Europe and Earth Journalism Network grant, supported by World Environment Magazine.

Bangkok, 12 March 2013.  At the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of Parties to CITES in Bangkok, Thailand, proposals from various governments to list five species of sharks under CITES were debated against a backdrop characterised by a new momentum, driven by emerging pro-shark conservation states from South America and West Africa acting as a long awaited foil to the established commercial fishing interests of certain countries - including Japan and China.

In an initiative to raise awareness on the importance of Marine Biodiversity while merging arts with sciences on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), the Faculty of Natural & Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the University Research Board, organized a series of interfaculty events from May 21st till 29th, 2012. The capstone was a ceremony for awards distribution and exhibition opening of all the competitions products organized under the patronage of Mr. Nazem El Khoury, Minister of Environment and Fr. Walid Moussa, Notre Dame University President.

Chimpanzees at the Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon recently had an opportunity to become amateur plumbers for the day while their water system was being repaired, and when the taps finally started flowing again, they celebrated as only chimpanzees can.

(CNN) -- A forlorn and frightened pygmy elephant calf, reaching out its trunk to touch its dead mother.

That's the heartbreaking scene local authorities came across recently as they patrolled the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve in northeastern Borneo.
