Reaching Out for the Oceans: Europe's Biggest Nautical Spectacle |

Once every five years, tall ships from all over the world converge on the Dutch capital for a five-day international nautical spectacle—SAIL Amsterdam. Attracting more than 600 ships and an expected 1.8 million visitors, this is Europe’s largest ‘admission free’ nautical event.
The highlight of SAIL Amsterdam 2010 which takes place this month is the SAIL-IN parade on the first day (19 August), an impressive fleet of tall ships and a large accompanying fleet crossing the North Sea Canal to Amsterdam.

Millions of pieces of plastic — smaller thn half an inch — float throughout the oceans. They are invisible to satellites, and except on very calm days you won’t even see them from the deck of a sailboat. The only way to know how much junk is out there is to tow a fine net through the water.

The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico drew some interesting responses from the European Commissioner of Energy, Günther Oettinger and the Commissioner of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki. In a speech to the European Parliament on 7 July, Oettinger referred to ‘the maritime aspects of the challenges we’re facing, notaby how we can turn the terrible accident in the Gulf of Mexico into an opportunity for literally “untapped waters” so far, such as the potential for renewable ocean energy’. Renewable ocean energy – as an alternative to deepwater oil? Was the Commissioner serious?
