USD 4 Billion Pledged in Oslo for REDD+ Partnership |

UNFCCC NEWS,
The REDD+ Partnership, an initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, was presented at a meeting held in Oslo, Norway, on 27 May 2010.
Heads of state and government, ministers and other representatives of some 50 countries concluded an agreement that saw pledges of around USD 4 billion for the period 2010–2012. It marks the start of closer global cooperation on reducing deforestation and forest degradation in tropical developing countries.

Getting the right regulatory environment is vital in order to ensure the successful development of smart grids. While governments agree on the importance of rolling out smart-grid technology, trying to create the right regulatory environment to do it is causing them a headache. The companies that manage Europe's energy networks, such as Enel Distribuzione in Italy and Electricité Reseau Distribution France, are warning that they must be allowed to pass on some of the upfront costs of developing smart grids if they are to afford the investment. They say that current pricing restrictions, placed on them as regulated monopolies, prevent them from doing this.

Speaking at waste industry trade show Futuresource this week, Coca Cola's European recycling director Patrick McGuirk said stand alone initiatives that each did their bit for the environment would not cut it anymore, and responsible corporations needed to look beyond the four walls of their own factories, warehouses or retail outlets.
